Why I Believe in the Healing Power of Art

For as long as I can remember, art has been a way of understanding the world around me and the experiences within me. I have always been drawn to the way creativity can help us express what words sometimes cannot. A colour, an image, a texture, or a simple mark on a page can hold memories, emotions, and stories that are waiting to be acknowledged.

My journey as an artist has taught me that creating is not just about making something beautiful. It is about connection. It is about being present with ourselves, exploring what we are feeling, and giving ourselves permission to be curious about our own experiences.

Throughout my career as a communications executive, I have spent more than 30 years helping people and organizations understand the power of stories. I have seen how stories can build connection, create understanding, inspire change, and help people feel seen and heard. Over time, I became increasingly interested in the connection between creativity, emotional well-being, and healing. This led me to expand my own learning and become a certified trauma-informed art therapy practitioner, with additional training in trauma-informed practice, healing arts, DEIA, negotiation, mediation and conflict resolution, and workplace psychological health and safety. This work has deepened my belief that art can be a meaningful pathway for expression and connection.

Art does not have to be perfect. It does not have to be judged. It does not require someone to call themselves an artist. It simply requires a willingness to begin.

For many people, creative expression offers a safe and gentle way to explore thoughts, emotions, memories, and experiences that may feel difficult to put into words. It can provide space for reflection, self-discovery, and a deeper understanding of ourselves.

In my work, I support people from all walks of life, including individuals who have experienced trauma, loss, life transitions, and difficult circumstances. I also work with survivors who are seeking ways to express their lived experiences, reclaim their voices, and create something meaningful from what they have been through.

A trauma-informed approach means meeting people where they are. It means creating space that honours safety, choice, trust, and compassion. It means recognizing that every person’s story is unique and that each person’s creative journey belongs to them.

I believe art gives us a way to hold both the difficult and beautiful parts of being human.

It allows us to remember, imagine, process, and reconnect.

Whether someone picks up a paintbrush, writes a story, explores photography, works with mixed media, or simply experiments with colour and form, creativity can become a powerful companion through life’s experiences.

We all carry stories. We all have something worth expressing.

Sometimes, the simple act of creating can help us see ourselves, and our experiences, in a new way. And sometimes, that is where healing begins.
